Newspaper Project

 

In this unit you will work in small groups to prepare a printed school newspaper. You will gather information for stories (text and images) and use a DTP (desk top publishing program) to produce the final paper. You will learn to develop strategies of group working.

You should also be using the typing games links to develop your typing speed!

Task 1

Use this template to plan out the following:

  • Who will be your audience - everyone, year 9 only, parents and children?
  • What subjects will you cover?
  • What pictures will you want to include - how will you get them (can you use a scanner?).
  • Who will write what in your team?

Task 2

Look at this page showing the main features of a newspaper - it is interactive - click on it to explore!

Decide on a layout - Use the Internet to find some samples of newspaper and discuss their layout - What is good and bad about each. Try to sketch the layout on a piece of plain paper - name of your paper, headlines, pictures, adverts. Provide evidence of the websites you visit.

Review this  presentation to see how graphics could be used.

Open Publisher and . . . write the articles. Run through this tutorial - it will show you how to use the Microsoft Newsletter wizard. If you are writing headlines, look again at this presentation to get some help with how it is done.

Task 3

Design a newspaper logo. You can use this tutorial in using MS Paint to help you. Put your logo into your newspaper.

Task 4

Write an advert to go into your newspaper. Look at advertisements in your local newspapers before doing this. You can decide what the advert will advertise. Look at this checklist to ensure you lay out the advert professionally.

Put your newspaper together!

Ask for permission and then . . . . . ."go to press" . . . . . . . . and. . . . . print it!

At the end of this unit

  • you should be working at level 4 if you can: design a newspaper using information you have collected aiming it at a certain audience; collect images to use and change them to suit your newspaper (cut them, change the size/brightness colours); work with others when producing the newspaper producing a final newspaper of two ore more pages using information, images and data that comes from all member of the group.

  • you are working at around level 5 if you can: work with a groups to produce a newspaper and contribute some text or an image to the final newspaper; you might use  a scanner or camera or get an image from the internet; share information

  • you may be working at level 6 if you can: plan the newspaper production by producing a schedule of what work needs to be done; you might keep track of tasks completed to make sure you meet the deadline; you may also have designed more than one layout to suit different audiences
