Year 8 ICT

Introduction to ICT - Presenting Information

In this unit you will learn about our school network and develop your word processing skills. The project will involve you gathering, presenting and communicating information about yourself. You will also be using various typing tutors which will help you to speed up your typing!

Make sure you can log on. Your teacher will provide you with a username and password. Keep your password safe and secure. If you forget your password you must only see Mr Smith before school, breaktime, lunchtime or after school.

Make sure you have read the ICT classroom rules which are in your homework diary. Remember, there are a lot of rules which may be different than other classroom rules.

"About ME" Project

Task 1
Create folders in your My Documents for every subject you study. This will help keep your work organised throughout the year. In your ICT folder make another folder and call it "Unit 1", You should save all the following tasks in here.

Task 2
A lot of your friends have probably been asking you what you were up to over the summer. You're probably sick of telling the same story over and over again! Type out a few paragraphs saying what you did. There should be evidence of the following tools in your document; Bold, Underline, Centre, WordArt, ClipArt, Tables, Borders and Bullet Points. Before doing this look at the following presentation which will give you some useful layout guidelines.

Task 3
As you go from class to class you are probably getting asked "What is your name?" and "Where do you come from?". Create a poster "advertising yourself". As well as the tools in Task 2, you must also insert a digital photograph of yourself. In small groups discuss what you should include in the poster. Use the following template to plan out the contents of your poster before working on the computer.

Task 4
Your local council has heard about the new presentational skills you have developed and wants you to promote the area you live in. Not many people have been visiting your area and local shops and businesses need to make more money!. Use Word Processing software to advertise your town/village. Use the skills you have developed in Task 2 and 3. Photographs of your area would be useful. You can use the scanner or digital camera to retrieve images.

Task 5
Use this template to evaluate how well you completed Task 2, 3 and 4. Open another copy of the template and evaluate your friend's work.
