Year 10 ICT

Changing (ICT) Rooms

Room ICT1 needs a face lift badly! In this task you will create a design for the room, working to a budget of £3000 to cover paint, flooring, furniture and anything else your design requires. The room must seat 20 people. Your ICT skills are needed to plan out the room, get prices for paint and flooring and produce a single page plan. Your design report should be aimed at the school council.

Task 1 - Design
The basic design. Open this picture in a graphics package like Paint and colour it in with your colours - (use as many picture editing tools as possible. You may only use a maximum of four colours.

Concentrate on the walls, floor and all surfaces.

Task 2 - Paint
Paint - lots of it are required! But how much? If we buy too much we waste money - too little and the job is incomplete! Use this spreadsheet to get a price for the paint required. You will need to visit some web sites to get paint costs and coverage. Record evidence of the websites you visit.
The room is 14m long, 7m wide and 2.5m high. There are 10 window panes.

Task 3 - Flooring
Flooring is a real must - you can choose carpet or laminate flooring or even lino. Find some suppliers and get prices. Use a spreadsheet to work out the area of the room that needs flooring. Record evidence of the websites you visit.

Task 4 - Furniture
Furniture is a must - you need chairs for 20 (and a comfy one for the teacher!). Find a supplier and a cost - use a new spreadsheet to total up the costs for chairs and to keep a record of what you suggest. Record evidence of the websites you visit.

Task 5 - The final presentation
Your design and costing needs to be approved by the school council.
The final plan and costing is required on a single sheet. Use all of your work above to produce a poster with the design from task 1, the paint costs, the flooring costs and the furniture costs. Be sure to put your name on your sheet.

Task 6 - Evaluation
Write an evaluation of your work. Click here to get a copy of the template

What level have you reached?

  • You should be working at level 4 if you can: collect some data on materials and put it into a useful and easy to understand form for your target audience; data will have come from different places; prepare a presentation suitable for your target audience combining text, graphics and charts.

  • You are working at around level 5 if you can: get some materials data, prepare a chart or table, make changes to a spreadsheet and add it to a poster.

  • You may be working at level 6 if you can: collect information from the internet, CD ROM or newspaper; produce charts for display in another package; create a poster presentation that meets the needs of your target audience – it will show a common theme in all elements used (image, text, charts).
