Jayne's Holiday

In this project you will use the Internet for research. You will then analyse and present your research using various pieces of software.

What you will do

Imagine you are a travel agent. You will produce a holiday itinerary for Jayne and her family (husband and one boy age 12 and one girl age 13). You will suggest a country, area, accommodation and travel

VERY IMPORTANT - Create a folder inside your ICT folder called "Project2 Holiday" and save all tasks carried out in here.

Brief

Jayne enjoys a warm climate for a holiday as her children like water sports. She enjoys visiting cities and is particularly fond of art galleries. She works at a school so can only go in school holidays. She speaks French but does not mind traveling to a country where she may not know the local language. Her son can get fall ill if the temperature is very hot for long periods. She can spend no more than £2200 on travel, accommodation, trips and activities. She wants to leave from Bristol International Airport (if possible).

Before you start - try this web quest to get you thinking about searching the Internet! Print it out and fill in your answers.

Task 1

List what you see as the main travel requirements for Jayne and her family. Use Word as a 'jotter' to keep records of what you are doing. Save the file as 'holiday'. You may want to click on this amazing map of the world taken by a satellite - it shows the Earth at night - the white bits are lights. It might help you to pick out possible areas for Jayne to go.

Task 2

Working with a partner and using the Internet and Encarta world atlas, find a country and a location (e.g. Southern Spain) that matches Jayne's requirements. Once you have done this, try to choose a specific location - town, hotel or other accommodation type. Here is a selection of websites that will start you searching! Keep a list of sites you use - try to find out the WHOLE TRUTH about the destination (e.g www.expedia.com).

Task 3
Finding weather data

Find out the climate and plot a chart to show the rainfall and temperature in your chosen location (Use MS Excel).

Task 4
Finding information about activities

Find out some activities that her children could do and that Jayne might enjoy. Cost them if possible (some might be free like swimming on a beach).

Task 5
Finding flight information

Find a flight - airline, departure times and costs.

Task 6
Assembling a brochure

Assemble an attractive brochure.

You must include the following in your brochure:

  • details of the climate
  • flight information
  • hotel information
  • visits and trips
  • pictures of the location
  • what is not so good about the location - is there any crime, noise, building work, political problems, risk of natural disasters like Earthquakes?
  • the costs
  • Where the information you used came from

Task 7
Evaluation

When complete, write an evaluation of your work. Click here to download a copy of the template.

What level have you achieved?

At the end of this unit

  • You should be working at level 5 if you can : find and use a number of sources to select relevant information appropriate for the place you choose; reformat the information to make it interesting and easily understood for the target audience; list four things you think made you work successful, discuss how you could use the ideas you have learnt in other work.

  • You may be working at level 4 if you can : search a number of sources to find information about a destination; save your work and open it later to continue working on

  • You may be working at level 6 if you can : use presentation software effectively to produce a document; produce your work with little help
