Students celebrate World Book Day with a series of events celebrating the enjoyment of reading.

Lunchtime activities included the Great Literary Treasure Hunt, with students searching for clues, based on novels throughout The College.  There was only one minute between the top five teams, but in the end two teams completed the treasure hunt in a time of fifteen minutes and those were The Little Angels, consisting of Dylan, Mark, Conor and Naomi from 8MK and Leopard Gecko, consisting of, well, just Daryl from 10CW!

Tuesday saw Year 10 students taking part in “The ApPENtice,” which aimed to find the next great writer amongst them.  Based on the BBC series of a similar name, the teams were supervised by “Margaret & Nicks” who were very well played by Year 13 Performing Arts students.  The Year 10s not only wrote stories, but designed covers and planned marketing campaigns.  The winning teams will have their books placed in the College Library, as well as managing to avoid the wrath of the fearful tycoon, Sir Timothy Sugar!

Tuesday also saw the launch of the 6th Form Literary Society which was very well attended.  This month, the students are reading “The Kite Runner,” by Khaled Hussaini.

On Thursday – World Book Day – everyone in the college decided to Drop Everything and Read for Period 1.  All staff and students enjoyed reading novels f their choice for a blissful 50 minutes.

Thursday was also Genre Day for Year 8, who enjoyed a series of workshops exploring different literary genres, including:

  • Teen Spy – Miss Magee based the workshop on favourite literary teen spy Alex Ryder, and his many gadgets.
  • Kidnap – Mrs Anderson, and her evil accomplices had kidnapped Dr Jennings.  The students, working as FBI Agents, had to devise a rescue plan.
  • Fairy Tales with a Twist – Mrs Murtagh and The Year 13 Performing Arts students, explored  the genre of fairy tales – but not as we know them!

Our World Book Day assembly was taken by Mr Torrens, Principal of Dunclug Primary School.  Mr Torrens shared a favourite book with us, and talked about why he felt reading should be an essential part of life.  Mr Torrens also presented prizes to the winning Treasure Hunt Teams.

The Students greatly enjoyed the week of celebration, and would like to thank their teachers for the fun!
